Crossing Into the Mystic by DL Koontz

Crossing Into The Mystic (The Crossings Trilogy #1)

Now and then, you see something that alters how you view the world.

That's what teen orphan Grace MacKenna learns in this paranormal suspense novel, Into the Mystic, the first book in The Crossings Trilogy.

Death, ghosts and the foibles of the living all collide together for our insufferably independent protagonist as she escapes from a volatile aunt in Boston to the secluded mountains of West Virginia, wrestles with lingering anger over the horrific deaths of her parents and sister, finds unexpected friendships in the local riverside town, and tackles a budding romantic triangle with two very different young men one living, one dead.

In her isolated mountainside home, Grace discovers how to see and talk with ghosts. In particular, she is pulled into the life of a dashing Civil War ghost, William, and unwittingly finds herself helping him resolve unfinished business so he can cross into the hereafter.

But is Grace actually experiencing angels and demons in disguise? Will she find out too late? And will her developing love for the ghost affect her decisions regarding her real-life romance? Before learning the answers, you ll journey with her to the backwoods flatlands of Georgia, and to Antietam Battlefield (during a full moon "when the divide between life and death is weakest...") where Grace interacts with menacing ghosts.

Join Grace as she learns that forbidden love can make demands that teeter between life and death.

"If you believe the Bible is true, you ought to know that demons are real. The Bible is filled with references of evil and demons, and Christ repeatedly cast out demons, so I believe the universe is much more complex and mysterious than it may appear to our senses.”

Orphaned, Grace decides to move from Boston to the mountains of West Virgina. To an estate owned by her ancestors and has mysteries that date back to the civil war. She sees the ghosts that roam the land and wants to solve their mystery to help them move on. The mixing of several characters both alive and dead really helped the story progress and move along with a good pace. Along with the stories of the ghosts we get to look into the past, with a focus on the Civil War that adds a flair of history to the storyline.

The setting creates a haunting and at times dream-like effect to the story. The main storyline leading to the help of God to recognize the good and evil that crosses her path. The ideas of living life and what the afterlife might be, are subjects that will course throughout you as you read. A push on your beliefs and make you think "what if"

It is a paranormal romance, Grace will find attraction and love during the course of the novel. A colliding of faith, paranormal and spiritual bonding are all prominent and important to this story. I love paranormal stories and the fact that this one adds in a lot of historical scenes was an added bonus. I thought it was very well written and thought provoking. It is something I would recommend to those that are looking for something a little different and have a good message.
