Slumber by Tamara Blake (re-post)

Once upon a time, Ruby believed in magic…

When Ruby volunteers to take her mother's housecleaning shift at the gothic Cottingley Heights mansion, she thinks it's going to be business as usual. Clean out the fridge, scrub toilets, nothing too unusual. But nothing could prepare her for the decadent squalor she finds within. Rich people with more money than sense trashing their beautiful clothes and home just because they can. After the handsome Tam discovers her cleaning up after him and his rich friends, Ruby has never felt more like a character from her sister’s book of fairy tales.

Tam sees beyond Ruby’s job and ratty clothes, and sweeps her off her feet, treating her like a real princess, but Ruby is sure this beautiful boy is too good to be true. And as one tragedy after another befalls Ruby and her family, Ruby painfully learns that magic is all too real, and it always comes with a price

Ruby's mother is sick and they are barely making enough money to live on. Residing in a mobile home, with her mother and little sister. Ruby takes over her  mothers job to be able to say afloat. She is already on the verge of dropping out and when her mother becomes ill. Keeping her alive is the only thing on her mind.

The cleaning of  Cottingley Heights is not an easy task. Especially just one person for a couple  of hours at a time. Honey on the floor, stains in the carpet and clothing thrown onto every open spot in each room. Very expensive clothes, jewelry, drugs and alcohol are to be found everywhere, tossed aside as if they don't cost or mean a thing to any of them. Which sickens Ruby to the bone considering her own circumstances.

Tam makes his appearance in the story right from the beginning. Yet Ruby is a little cautious with opening up to him because of his lifestyle. But the interest he shows in her and the idea of a somewhat stable paycheck, she continues to work at the house.

Needless to say Ruby gets caught up in some mischievous agendas of the residents and it puts her and her whole family in turmoil. She will have to overcome several tests to regain any glimpse of normality back into her life. Least of all get out alive.

Giveaway!: RecruitZ by Karice Bolton

Book & Author Details:

RecruitZ by Karice Bolton
(Afterworld #1)
Publication date: December 27th 2013
Genres: New Adult, Post-Apocalyptic
Scientists are the new rock stars. The infection has been contained for nearly three months, and the world is celebrating. But humans are still dying. Rebekah Taylor has seen it firsthand. Her husband was killed right in front of her by the very creatures that humans were told they no longer had to fear.

Rebekah is determined to find out who is responsible for the death of her husband and the obvious cover-up. Fueled with revenge, she begins to find answers that lead to one frightening conclusion. The apocalypse might be over, but the battles are just beginning.

Character Interview with Rebekah from RecruitZ

Do doubt your sanity with everything you’ve uncovered, after your husband’s death?

I still doubt my sanity. When I saw my husband taken by those creatures—targeted by those creatures—I knew something was deadly wrong. The outbreak had been contained to a point. We had all been vaccinated… yet I watched my husband die by the very beings we were told we didn’t have to fear any longer.

When even my closest friends didn’t believe what I saw my world became very fragile… I’d say there were many times I doubted my sanity and with everything I’ve continued to uncover, it’s hard not to wonder who the crazy one is. I’d like to think it’s not me, but that’s probably up for debate by some.

When you met Preston in the bar, did you expect him to become so important in your life?

I saw something that night in his eyes. The same pain and torment I wake up with every single day, but I didn’t expect him to hold so many answers. No. I really didn’t expect it. I just thought he was a bartender that ran with the wrong crowd.

And I still can’t believe what we’ve discovered about the Afterworld, and who we’re having to fight just to stay alive. I thought being on the run during the outbreak was behind me, but it seems to be just the beginning.

Did you think you might not survive the outbreak?

There were many days I didn’t think Gavin and I would make it. Then there were days when I saw that glimmer of hope and knew we could survive. It was the best feeling in the world when Gavin and I got vaccinated, but it was also one of the worst as we realized how many loved ones we’d lost. It’s a tough thing to handle. But that’s why I need to find the answers to what’s really going on in the Afterworld.

Author Interview

Thank you so much for having me! I’m so excited to share a bit about my latest series, The Afterworld! RecruitZ was a blast to write, and I’m loving Alibiz just as much!!

Do you watch Zombie movies?

I LOVE zombie movies! I’ve watched far more zombie movies than I’ve read zombie books. I probably shouldn’t mention that though! Oops!! Some of my favorite zombie flicks are Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and World War Z.

You generally write contemporary and paranormal romance. Is there any romance in The Afterworld Series?

I do generally write stories that are heavy on romance, but with the Afterworld Series the story doesn’t allow for it right away. It wouldn’t be natural. However, a glimmer of something does surface in RecruitZ and it will continue to flourish through the series. But it will definitely not be the main part of the story.

What is your favorite scene in RecruitZ?

I have so many! I loved the Zombie Pit scene and all the scenes where Rebekah kicks butt, which is often.

Thanks again for allowing me to stop by!

Blog Tour Indigo Incite (The Indigo Trilogy #1) by Jacinda Buchmann

There are no secrets

Sixteen-year-old Tyler believed that his extra-sensory powers were a secret, but when his twin brother, Toby, is kidnapped by a covert government agency, he realizes that he has no secrets, and he has nowhere to hide.

He’s not alone

Now, to save himself and rescue his brother, Tyler must call upon the help of four strangers. Unknown to each other, Eddie, Liliana, Grace, and Sarah share a common bond. They are Indigo Children. With extra-sensory powers of their own, they must unite with Tyler to maintain their freedom.

Unexpected romance

They’re on the run. They’re on a mission. Romance is a distraction that Tyler can’t afford. But sometimes, the heart has a mind of its own.

Time is running out

Will they find Toby before the agency finds them first? Find out in Indigo Incite, Book One of the Indigo Trilogy.
Paperback, 1st Edition, 272 pages
****4 Stars  ****

Indigo Incite is a book that follows a handful of different characters that will all eventually unite. The focus of the story is Tyler and Toby. Toby has been kidnapped and because of the connection the twins have, he has been giving Tyler the information on how to find the others, before they are also kidnapped by the IIA. These Indigo Children all of special abilities and other characteristics in common.

Each in turn get their story told, and also each develop throughout the story. They all find a special connection to others and romance buds in several hearts, not just Tyler.

The writing style is constant movement. Not only do they have to find each other, living in different states, different ages and lifestyles. But they also do some traveling in Mexico. They plan to reunite Tyler and Toby and rescue Toby from the fortress he is locked in.

What I loved about the story was the combination of characters. I am glad to have jumped around and learned about each of them in turn, and their growing emotions for each other. Their similarities uniting them more as a family unit than just friends. It was nice to see the story from both male and female perspectives. As well as their age range varied this story could be also categorized as New Adult as well as Teen.

I recommend this book for fans of mystery and adventure stories. It has a bit of the Paranormal with the special abilities. Also ups the anty when the group has to fight against this big corporation to save Toby. And all while getting chased by them (IIA) to be locked away as well.

Spellbound series is a mix of Pretty Little Lairs meets Buffy, the Vampire Slayer!
Sherry has compiled a few of her favorite moments from the first two Young Adult books in the thrilling and romantic Spellbound series. Enjoy the excerpts!

Quote from BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN – “Initial Glimpse”:

The hottie sat down and reclined, stretching out his arms on the back of the bench. He crossed his legs in the dude-esque, one ankle-over-the-opposite-thigh leg cross, and I caught a glimpse of his badass black motorcycle boots. The skin on his face was fair and smooth, and only his strong, square jaw saved his features from femininity. Gorgeous—a ten on a scale of Abercrombie model hotness. Tall, too, with spiky blond hair and eyes an amazing emerald hue.
He turned his head, his gaze capturing mine. My face flamed, interrupting my ogling. His eyes widened, then narrowed. His arms dropped to his sides. Once those hypnotic eyes seized mine, the atmosphere shifted and, for a moment, my heart ceased to beat. The intensity of his stare seemed to quiet all the thoughts and emotions whirling around inside my head. The lingering anxiety from this morning vanished.
After who knows how long, he slowly—almost reluctantly—turned away. He kept his head down like he had something to hide. Something he didn’t want people to see. Something he didn’t want me to see.
Quote from BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN – “Meet the Kitten”:

Ah, poor baby. Are you hungry?” I asked and the kitten loudly meowed. “Can we feed her?” I glanced at Trent with a pouty expression. “Please?”
He shook his head, throwing up his hands. “Sure. There’s milk in the kitchen. I’ll be right back.”
He returned with a bowl of milk and set it on the floor. I lowered the cat and she greedily lapped up the milk.
She’s cute,” Trent said.
The ball of fluff raised her head, licking white drops off her mouth.
What should we name her?” I hoisted the kitten and cuddled her in my arms.
Trent wrapped one arm around me, and scratched under her white chin. “Charm?” he asked, looking into my eyes as his breath tickled my neck.
I melted into the crook of his arm. “It’s perfect.”
He rubbed the cat behind her ears. “I’d rather have a dog,” he teased.
I covered the cat’s pointy ears with my hands. “Shhh, Charm will hear you.”
Trent grinned, taking the kitten from my arms and surprising me by kissing Charm’s head. He set her on the floor and grasped my hand. The same shock lit up all my nerve endings.
Come on,” he said, then turned back. “Here kitty, kitty.”

Quote from BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN – “A Kiss”:

His hands gripped my shoulders and he yanked me against him, his mouth covering mine in a deep kiss. The caress of his lips was softer than I’d imagined. An unfamiliar rush of excitement engulfed my senses. My hands wrapped around his neck, fingering his silky hair. His moist lips seared a path along my neck, igniting a blaze of desire that flooded my skin everywhere his lips touched. My heart pounded. Then his mouth found mine and my whole body tingled. He touched my face softly with his fingertips, holding me in place. My own fingers caressed his face, his neck, grasped onto his shoulders. My nails dug into his shirt as I kissed him back. I was overcome with heat and yearning. I pressed myself closer to him, knowing all the while that we could be caught at any moment by his uncle. I didn’t care.
Boys had kissed me before, but not like this. Never like this. And I wanted more. Now. I leaned into him…

Quote from MOONLIGHT MAYHEM – “Hero Intercedes”:

His hands flickered upward, and before I knew it, they were cupping my face. So damnably fast now. Demon-like fast. He reeled me closer, and our foreheads joined. He held me, while I trembled in his arms. I was vaguely aware of Evans and Maxwell watching, although it didn’t seem important. Nothing seemed important whenever he held me. As if we were enclosed in our own personal bubble made only for the two of us. We stood like that until my shaky legs regained strength. I shut my eyes and pretended my body wasn’t sizzling with heat-lightning because Trent stood so close. My hormones always decided to rebel whenever he put his arms around me. It felt like the best thing I’d experienced since before Dad’s death. And that’s saying a bunch.

Thank you so much for letting me chat up my YA series with all of you. It’s been an honor to share my favorite moments from the first two books in the Spellbound series. If you haven’t seized your copy of BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN yet, please do so. Epic thrills, spooky adventures, and passionate romance await you! I hope everyone enjoyed this post, now go feed your mind and read a book! Preferably one of mine. 
Deadly Witchcraft. Ghostly Threats. Doomed Romance.
They say every town has its secrets, but that doesn’t even begin to describe Fallen Oaks. The townsfolk are a superstitious lot and the mystical disappearance of a local teen has everyone murmuring about a centuries old witch’s curse.
When sixteen-year-old Shiloh Trudell takes a summer job at Craven Manor, she discovers a ghost with an agenda. That’s where she meets the new town hottie, Trent Donovan, and immediately becomes enchanted by his charms.
Finally, Shiloh’s met someone who is supercute and totally into her, but Trent is immersed in the cunning deception that surrounds the mysterious Craven Manor. So much so that he may lose sight of what is truly important to him. And she can’t decide whether she wants to shake him or kiss him. Yet neither one of them can deny the immediate, passionate connection growing between them.
But underlying everything is the fear that Trent may be the next victim on a supernatural hit list, and Shiloh is the only person with the power to save him…
With cryptic messages from a pesky wraith, Shiloh will finally begin to understand the mysterious significance of the strange mark branded on her wrist and decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to protect the other teenagers in town.

Aquifer by Jonathan Friesen

Only he can bring what they need to survive.

In the year 2250, water is scarce, and those who control it control everything. Sixteen-year-old Luca has struggled with this truth, and what it means, his entire life. As the son of the Deliverer, he will one day have to descend to the underground Aquifer each year and negotiate with the reportedly ratlike miners who harvest the world's fresh water. But he has learned the true control rests with the Council aboveground, a group that has people following without hesitation, and which has forbidden all emotion in the name of keeping the peace. This Council has broken his father's spirit, while also forcing Luca to hide every feeling that rules his heart.

But when Luca's father goes missing, everything shifts. Luca is forced underground, and discovers secrets and mysteries that cause him to questions who he is and the world he serves. Together with his friends and a very alluring girl, Luca seeks to free his people and the Rats from the Council's control. But Luca's mission is not without struggle and loss, as his desire to uncover the truth could have greater consequences than he ever imagined.
Hardcover, 304 pages
Published August 6th 2013 by Blink
ISBN  0310731828 (ISBN13: 9780310731825)
I received a copy of this book for review from http://booklookbloggers.com/

In a futuristic Australia, the whole world is dependent on the Aquifer and the relationship between those who control it "The Rats" and those above, led by "The Council". This relationship is held with a yearly contract in which the Deliverer visits the Rats for a yearly conference. Luca is the next in line to become a Deliverer and the only other person besides his father that knows the way down to the Rats.
In a world that has abolished human emotions as much as possible. The domino effect of the events that take place get harder and harder for Luca and others to control theirs. A council that tries it's hardest to banish such things, seems to be is loosing it's control of their people. Luca has to grow up fast, and that means learning new things. Secret things. It seems that everybody is not who they seem to be anymore.
The story is a non-stop adventure that will take us through the school system, history museum and the aquifer itself. I think perhaps the saddest part of the story for me was the people that had to be undone. Those that caused too many wrinkles are cast away, and not in a good way. It's gruesome and really sad. But that part of life was a daily dealing for Luca and his father.
Aquifer was a very fast and thought provoking read. I recommend it to those that enjoy dystopian stories. It was a very nice change to read about a young boy finding love for the first time, and the friendships he gains throughout the book with both old and young. Even at his age he stands out as the strongest character in the book.

Blog Tour! Stonewiser by Dora Machado

Winner of the 2009 Benjamin Franklin Award for best Debut Novel

Finalist for 2009 Foreword Book of the Year Award for SFF

Between truth and deception, between justice and abuse, a stonewiser stands alone with the stones. Or so begins the stonewiser's oath. But what happens when a rebellious stonewiser discovers that lies have tainted the stone tales?

In a world devastated by the rot's widespread destruction, only the tales preserved in the stones can uphold the truth and defend the Goodlands. In this world, stone truth is valued above anyone's word, and stonewisers are the only ones capable of retrieving the tales from the stones, the only link between past and present, order and chaos.

Sariah is the most gifted stonewiser of her generation, but her talent does not atone for her shortcomings. A survivor of the Guild's brutal training, she is curious, willful and disobedient. Yet not even Sariah is prepared for what she finds when she steals into the Guild's Sacred Vaults: A mayhem of lies and intrigues that shatters her world.

Hunted, persecuted, and betrayed, Sariah must make an unlikely alliance with Kael, a cynical rebel leader pledged to a mysterious quest of his own. The fate of their dying world depends on their courage to overcome centuries of hatred and distrust. But not even the grueling journey has prepared them for what they are about to discover. Because nothing is really as it seems, and the truth is more intricate and devastating than they ever suspected....

Blog Tour! Porcelain Keys by Sarah Beard

"A lyrical love story that will leave your heart singing. Porcelain Keys is a masterpiece
with emotional depth, young love, and family angst. Beard takes us on a journey of self discovery,
second chances, and ultimately, sweet resolution." --Heather Ostler, author
or The Siren's Secret

Aria's life is full of secrets--secrets about her mother's death, her father's cruelty, and her dream to go to Juilliard. When Aria meets Thomas, he draws out her secrets, captures her heart, and gives her the courage to defy her father. But when tragedy strikes and Thomas disappears, Aria is left alone to transform her broken heart's melody into something beautiful. Porcelain Keys is a captivating love story that will resonate long after the last page is turned.

Paperback, 352 pages
ISBN-10: 1462113966         ISBN-13: 978-1462113965

February 11th 2014 by Cedar Fort Publishing & Media

Porcelain Keys tells the story of two people longing to find a connection to the world. Aria and Thomas both come from families that are still healing from a death. After her mother's death Aria's father has become an angry drunk. He has started taking out all of his frustrations on Aria physically and emotionally. Causing her to count the days until her 18th birthday. When she meets her new neighbor Thomas, she finds a confidant and he soon pushes her to try to live her dreams and apply to Julliard.
They both have personal issues that they are learning to work out. Healing and forgiveness takes time and this book really delves deep into the different sides of healing emotionally. Although Thomas and Aria are experiencing different kinds of battles, they find that support in each other that is needed to push them to look towards the future, and take the steps to begin the healing process.
I think that Thomas and Aria were a good fit for each other. The story has a powerful storyline to it and the emotional ups and downs it takes to get over the hump. Some of their healing takes time and this story takes place over a couple of years.
Throughout the story Aria is a music lover, she plays the piano and likes to compose as well. This comes to an underlying focus throughout the story and the way she relates music into the real world, or how to relate the emotions of the real world into her music.
I would recommend this book to those that like to read about family issues, coming of age stories. It's a very clean read with a gripping plot.
