My "New Years Readers" Resolution

What is Your New Year's Reading Challenge?
As an Avid reader, sometimes I like to challenge myself. I am giving myself guidelines for what I should pick up next to read. I find that without giving myself guidelines, when I finish a book, a new one is very hard to decide on or even to get into. Well if you know me at all, here is some of my reading background. I will always finish a book I have started reading, even if it takes me three months to get through (and they have).

One of the Weirdest challenges I have set up will begin January 2011.
1-I will read 50 books before January 1st 2012 of any genre, or size that I want. (I call this brain candy)
2- I will also read 50 books from the 1001 Books you must read before you die list (by peter boxall) -I am including this in the "off the shelf" challenge to help motivate me to read all 50
3- Out of the above 100 books I will also be making sure that either the author's name or the title of the book will also complete the reading challenge A-Z. So 26 books of the above 100 must have an author's name or title that fits into each letter of the alphabet.
4-Last but not least I have taken on the 12 book Chicklit Challenge hosted by
And the ever popular YA author Debut Challenge hosted by

I have authorized myself that Audiobooks count as well

Now not to mention the books I get for review. I consider any book I read for review over the next year as counting towards my "Brain Candy 50." (as I usually only get fictional/Young Adult books)

I would love for all of you to follow along on my attempts, Please feel free to join me, recommend books to me or laugh at me in 2012 when I admit defeat. Who Knows!!

Please follow on
Twitter :!/Cubicleblindnes
or this blog where I will be keeping track of my books.

I also plan on doing monthly updates at the end of the month, with what I read, which ones I recommend and which ones I don't.       HAPPY READING AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Now, What are your new year's reading resolutions?

Wishlist Wednesday

Sorry I keep forgetting the name of the blog that hosts Wishing on Wednesday but I promise I will write it down next time! But for this WOW I am only listing one. It's one I cannot keep out of my mind and looking forward to Immensely! And it's only DAYS away before it will appear In My Mailbox

Off the Shelf Challenge

Off The Shelf!Ok, So now I can see that you guys think I'm completely crazy trying to do 3 challenges in 2011. But this challenge fits in exactly with my 50 reads I am doing for 1001 books to read before you die challenge because now I can actually commit myself to doing it and "sign on" for the challenge instead of just telling myself that I should do it. It's a little bit more of a motivation to get through these 50 books that honestly I am not completely excited to read, but think that I should really at least try, and lucky for me I have them already purchased (a long time ago) and ready to go! They have been gathering dust on my shelves way too long and need to be read. Here is a link to the challenge page itself and all of the hundreds of people that have signed up to participate!

My  Soul To Steal was Released Today!!! Yay! Plus she is having a great giveaway on her own blog for the whole Soul Screamers series or other signed books written by her! check it out!!!

My Soul To Steal by Rachel Vincent

My Soul to Steal (Soul Screamers #4)

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

I DON’T THINK SO.     My Soul to Steal (Soul Screamers, Book 4)

A Seriously mean girl shows up to school, and we see the first love triangle happen in the series. Sabine, an old girlfriend of Nash's, appears at school out of the blue. She's gorgeous, but she comes with a bite. She's nasty and out to get Nash back. Sabine is very confrontational and apparently non-human!
This book had some wonderful drama, and this time we get to see some of the teachers die, but are Nash and Kaylee able to save them this time, especially when Kaylee cannot even trust Nash and his new "friendship" with Sabine? Awesomly dramatized and well written, Sabine is the character we love to hate.
Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series is not one to miss, more entertaining with each book she writes.

Hudson was a typical teenager. He liked girls, sports, food and tolerated his younger brother, Nash. In fact, he had his whole life in front of him--and due to his bean sidhe heritage, it was going to be a very long life indeed. And then the car accident occurred.
Suddenly Tod's future wasn't so sure, and he had to make a choice. Life... Death... or something Between....
An ebook exclusive Soul Screamers series novella.

When this novella was introduced it was also for free. I got a kindle copy from Amazon here Reaper the offer was for a limited time, so I am not sure if it is still available for free. You may also be able to still find a free copy on the publishers website or a link from Rachel K Vincents website. This novella introduces us to how a reaper is made, what their choices are as a reaper and  the best part of all we get a whole novella on my favorite character in the series. Tod.

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.
Until something does.
Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.
And so is someone else…
Seriously. Demons-Breath. this whole new idea of an addictive drug from the Netherworld making it's way into the high school was kinda awesome. It had a lot of drama and interesting factors come into play and after finishing this one..I kept thinking about it. After the introduction Novella this so far has been my favorite book of the series. I feel like Tod needed a bigger role in this one.

When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.
So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn't wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can't cry for someone who has no soul.
The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad's ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend's loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can't possibly understand.
Kaylee can't let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk….

I was worried about this book at first, because I really was not sure how I felt about the characters focusing on just one soul. I didn't think that a whole novel on trying to save one soul of a pop star who signed it away for fame was going to be very interesting. But I really loved it when we got to see more of the Netherworld. So overall I still think this series is going strong, and the swoonworthy-ness of Nash gets pretty steamy. But no love triangle as of yet!

She doesn't see dead people, but

She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next

What I enjoyed about this book was that we see a lot of action for the newly discovered Banshee. While she is just discovering who she is, there is a lot of drama around town in which a handful of girls are dying that are not on the grim reapers "list". It also introduces my favorite characters Nash and Tod. I do like my novels with a lot of things going on so as not to bore me. And Rachel does that well with this book, introduces a lot of different people and a lot of different concepts/worlds/people.

It was supposed to be a fun day, shopping at the mall with her best friend. Then the panic attack started and Kaylee Cavanaugh finds herself screaming, unable to stop. Her secret fears are exposed and it's the worst day of her life.
Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit.
She tries to convince everyone she's fine--despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she's crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities...

So this introductory Novella I found for free on It was a quick listen, only about an hour long. This introduction in not necessary to read to understand the first novel in the Series, but What I loved about it was the dialogue. My favorite part being between Kaylee and the doctor at the mental health facility. So I found it completely worth the read, even if it did cost the $2 that I sometimes see it going for. Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry

Rot & Ruin Info from     Rot & Ruin (Benny Imura, #1)
In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human
OK so let me start off saying that this review is more on the audiobook telling than the actual book.

I hate when I gone done "reading" a book and just don't know how I feel about it. I thought this one over for a day or so and have just decided that I can't decide than it's getting three stars. First of all. the continuous use of the word ZOM drove me absolutely crazy. This was soo distracting for me. And I am just not sure why that got to me, I just counldn't figure out how saying one more syllable (ie) really could make a difference with the word. I understand in calling them something else all-together (Inconcecrated, minudoe, undead) I get those, but just didn't quite understand this choice. Also one of the characters is named Tom, so when I listened to the audiobook, all I kept hearing over and over was Zom and Tom. Ok I don't actually think it was the author's choice of the word Zom but the overuse of the word, sometimes 3-5 times in one paragraph.
I felt that this was more of a story-telling book than what I want from a Zombie book. Sure the Zombies appear and when they do they are great pages, but most of the novel is just the story of how the zom's came about and the mysterious girl they want to find, how they fight or decide not to fight the zomb's. It had a very similar feeling as Stephen Kings' THE BODY. Now most of you may know this story from the movie Stand By Me. Most of the movie is the boys telling stories, telling about their past/families, traveling to find the dead body. And then a little bit of action between the story telling, the train comes, they get leaches or the punks in town find them with the body and threaten them. So these exciting parts are always my favorite parts, but very few and far between (in my opinion of course). So thus I give it an ok. Wish I would have got it from the library kind of feel. But I have noticed tons of really good reviews of people that loved it on goodreads. I just could not get myself to feel the same.

I do think this would be a good book for a male teen. As a female I may have been a little detached from the characters. Oh, and I would recommend to buy the book rather than the audio. I think the audio really threw off the tone of the book, and I found it harder to concentrate on the story-line.
